Developed by Aurea Exhibitions and produced by Imagine Exhibitions, Inc., Da Vinci The Exhibition is a hands-on examination of Da Vinci’s life, research and art. Featuring more than 65 fully built, life-sized inventions, more than 20 fine art studies and dozens of stunning displays, guests will learn the complex beginnings and lifetime achievements of da Vinci through his discoveries in art, engineering, flight, hydraulics, music, light and more.

Throughout the exhibition’s themed galleries, visitors will discover the breadth and scope of da Vinci’s incredibly advanced understanding of science, mathematics, nature, and the relationship between the three. The artist’s intricate designs and extraordinary early concepts are spotlighted, including his design for the helicopter, tank, SCUBA, crane, clock, submarine and his plan for a modern city. Additionally, various multimedia experiences and documentary presentations throughout the space will provide a multitude of supplementary information on da Vinci’s discoveries and creative process.

In addition to da Vinci’s role as an inventor, the exhibition investigates a collection of da Vinci’s most renowned paintings, including some controversial works traditionally attributed to him, but not yet authenticated. Guests will have the opportunity to thoroughly study the artistic mastery behind such works as “Mona Lisa,”“The Last Supper,”“Portrait of a Young Man,”“Virgin of the Rocks,”“St. John the Baptist” and more.

Now running through the end of the year.

Nevada Senior Citizen of the Year 2014

Nevada Senior Citizen of the Year 2014
by Dr. Herb Randall

A “woman of valor,” Raymonde Fiol of Las Vegas, was chosen to be the Nevada Senior Citizen of the Year 2014.

The Nevada Delegation of the National Silver Haired Congress (NSHC) in partnership with the Aging Services Directors Organization (ASDO) established this award in 2013. Frank Pati of Mesquite was then selected to be the first-ever Nevada Senior Citizen of the Year.

The Director of Senior Services for the Jewish Family Service Agency, Ms. Nora Kraidman, wrote: “Mrs. Raymonde Fiol is on a mission for what we call in Hebrew “Tikkun Olam” – Repairing the World. Mrs. Raymonde Fiol has made it her life mission to preserve the memory of the Holocaust and to make sure Holocaust Survivors in our community and around the United States are provided with the services they need.”

Esther Finder, President, Generations of the Shoah – Nevada and member of the Governor’s Advisory Council on Education Relating to the Holocaust, described Mrs. Fiol like this: “Ray is a remarkable woman who has overcome tremendous hardships in her lifetime. She was three years old when the Nazis invaded Paris and by age seven her parents had been interned in concentration camps (ultimately murdered in Auschwitz) and she was in the care of a family of Righteous Gentiles who saved her. She now dedicates herself to making this world a better place and showing students, by her example, that despite the hardships people have to endure, they can make a good life for themselves.”

Ms. Finder continued: “Ray is the President of the Holocaust Survivors Group of Southern Nevada and is a member of the Governor’s Advisory Council on Education Relating to the Holocaust. She also serves on the Coordinating Council of Generations of the Shoah International (GSI), the largest Holocaust survivor family organization in the world.”

Ray Fiol arranges social events for the Las Vegas survivors, helps ensure that the ones in need get help from local agencies, and are treated with the dignity and respect they deserve.

According to Esther Finder, Ray also schedules survivors to speak with teachers and students all around Clark County in both public and private schools at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. She also has worked with the film department at UNLV on two documentaries which are being submitted to film festivals. One of these features her quite prominently. Ray speaks about her emotionally painful childhood experiences because she believes that it is important to teach students that prejudice and discrimination can cause serious harm.

Ms. Finder wrote in summary: “Ray Fiol is what Jewish tradition calls a “woman of valor.” Despite her experiences as a hidden child orphaned by the Holocaust, her message is positive and optimistic. We are lucky to have her in our Las Vegas community.”

The annual award for 2014 will be presented at the ASDO Annual Luncheon in May, which is Older Americans Month. The Governor has been invited to present the award.

Magician Nick Lewin Joins Our Editorial Staff

Nick Lewin Headshot

Master of Comedy Magic Nick Lewin joins our editorial staff as our new Entertainment Editor

Born in England, Lewin relocated to California in the mid-seventies to be closer to the world famous Magic Castle. His act quickly became a showroom favorite in Las Vegas and Lake Tahoe, where he shared the stage with performers such as Tony Bennett, Reba McIntire, Kenny Rogers and Paul Anka.

During the ‘90s Nick created an award winning one-man show in Las Vegas called ‘Comedy Magic’ that became a critical and commercial success. It was one of the very first daytime shows in Las Vegas and ran for nearly 5 years. ‘Nick Lewin’s Comedy Magic’ became the forerunner of an entirely new era of Vegas shows.

An accomplished magician and comedian, Nick is classically trained and has been featured in many TV appearances, including major acting roles on classic series such as, ‘Dynasty,’ ‘Amazing Stories,’ ‘Trapper John,’ ‘Kung Fu: the Legend Continues’ and ‘Alfred Hitchcock Presents,’ ’Misfit’s of Science,’ ‘Perfect Strangers.’ He also appeared as a performer on ‘Comedy Central,’ ‘Showtime,’ ‘HBO’ and Network TV.

In the 90s Lewin produced and hosted his own nationally syndicated show ‘The Entertainment Files.’ The audio version was amongst the first radio shows ever to be syndicated globally via the Internet. The ‘E-Files’ aired for three years on the radio and went on to become a weekly television series for the Fox Television Network. The award winning show combined celebrity interviews, entertainment news and movie reviews.

Throughout his career Lewin has been writing in one form or another, in 1976 Henry Regnery of Chicago published his first book, ‘Sleight of Crime: Murder, Mayhem and Mystery.’ The book featured murder mystery stories involving magicians. Now, 37 years later Nick is still writing and publishing books about magic, and is also a prolific columnist and writer for both online and printed magazines. His blog site has become a collective home for his various columns and essays.

When not performing or writing Nick likes to spend time in Las Vegas listening to Western Swing Music, working on his latest book, a translation of the lyrics of Bob Dylan into English.
